About Board Certification

Board Certified Orthodontists in San Diego, CA

Board certification by the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) is a voluntary credential that goes beyond the license required to practice. It requires an orthodontist to prove real clinical excellence through case reports and examinations. All three orthodontists at Smile Arc Orthodontics in 4S Ranch, Dr. Ehsani, Dr. Freda, and Dr. Sabet, are ABO Diplomates.

When you choose Smile Arc Orthodontics, every member of our clinical team has earned the specialty’s highest voluntary credential. Here is what that means.

Are All Orthodontists Board Certified?

No. Every orthodontist must be licensed, but board certification is an additional, voluntary step that not all pursue. It signals an orthodontist’s commitment to demonstrating actual accomplishments in patient care, with detailed case reports across a broad range of patient problems, evaluated by a respected panel of examiners.

The Only Recognized Board in the Specialty

The American Board of Orthodontics, founded in 1929, is the oldest specialty board in dentistry and the only certifying board in orthodontics recognized by the American Dental Association. Its purpose is to elevate the quality of orthodontic care for the public through certification, education, and professional collaboration.

What the Certification Process Requires

Certification involves a comprehensive written examination covering the full body of orthodontic knowledge, followed by a clinical examination in which the orthodontist presents detailed case reports demonstrating a history of excellent care. Those cases are reviewed by a panel and discussed in an oral examination across a wide range of academic and clinical topics. Certification is awarded for a limited period, and the orthodontist must renew it roughly every 10 years by continuing to demonstrate this level of care.
